Southern Africa has a number of active biotrade value chains at different stages of development, and with different levels of maturity with regard to implementation of ABS.
The ABioSA project and the BioInnovation Africa project work with several biotrade value chains and plant species in southern Africa. The value chains and species were selected based on criteria including traditional knowledge, ecological sustainability, market demand, potential for value-adding and job creation, and opportunities for participation of small and medium enterprises (SME) and indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs).
