Why this country?

Vanuatu is one of the Melanesian countries where the ABS Initiative has focused its work since 2012. The Environmental Protection and Conservation Act of 2002, amended in 2006 and 2011, has a section on bioprospecting that needs to be updated to ensure compliance with the Nagoya Protocol, which was ratified by Vanuatu in 2014. Vanuatu has been an active site for research and bioprospecting for many years, and the National Focal Point for ABS requested support from the ABS Capacity Development Initiative for the necessary national processes from an early stage.

Aim

The overall aim of the ABS Capacity Development Initiative’s work in Vanuatu is to support the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in all its dimensions
